Being able to drill a centered hole exactly where you want it is a foundational skill that improves every project, from hanging hardware to joining timber. The secret is careful marking and stopping the bit from skating.
Mark Your Centre Precisely
Accuracy starts before the drill is even switched on. Use a sharp pencil or a marking knife and cross two lines so the intersection gives you a clear, unambiguous target. On round or symmetrical stock, use a centre finder or diagonal lines from the corners to locate the true middle. A vague mark guarantees a wandering hole.
Give the Bit a Starting Point
A drill tip left to find its own way will drift across a smooth surface. Create a small divot for it to seat in. On metal, tap a centre punch on your mark; on wood, a bradawl or the point of a nail works well. This tiny crater captures the bit and keeps it from walking off the line.

Use the Right Bit for Centring

Keep the Drill Square
A hole can start centred yet still look wrong if the drill leans. Sight the bit against a small square, or have a helper check from ninety degrees to your view, so you are drilling truly perpendicular. A drill press removes this variable entirely and is worth using for critical work.

Practise on Scrap
Before committing to your workpiece, test your marking and technique on a scrap of the same material. A quick practice hole confirms your setup and builds the muscle memory that makes centred holes second nature.
