A screw extractor is the tool that turns a frustrating snapped bolt into a five-minute fix. When a fastener shears off or its head strips out, an extractor grips what is left and backs it out.
How a Screw Extractor Works
Most extractors have a tapered body with reversed, left-hand threads or flutes. You drill a pilot hole into the centre of the broken fastener, then thread or tap the extractor into that hole. Because the extractor cuts in the opposite direction to normal, turning it anticlockwise bites deeper while simultaneously unscrewing the stuck bolt.
Drill an Accurate Pilot Hole
Everything depends on a centred pilot hole. Mark the exact middle of the broken fastener with a centre punch, then drill a hole with a good sharp bit sized to match your extractor. A cobalt or quality metal-working bit is ideal, since broken bolts are often hardened. Keep the hole straight so the extractor sits square.

Set and Turn the Extractor
Insert the extractor into the pilot hole and tap it gently to seat the flutes. Using a tap wrench or an adjustable spanner, turn slowly anticlockwise with steady pressure. Patience matters here; sudden force can snap the extractor itself inside the hole, which is a far harder problem to solve.
Free a Stubborn Fastener First
If the bolt is seized by rust or thread-locker, help it along before extracting. A penetrating oil left to soak, or gentle heat on the surrounding metal, can break the bond. Working the fastener loose reduces the load on the extractor and greatly improves your chances of a clean removal.

- Heat with care: Warming the surrounding metal can release thread-locker.
Prevention and the Right Tools
Broken fasteners are often the result of a dull bit, over-tightening or drilling without a pilot. Sharp American-made drill bits, correct pilot holes and reasonable torque prevent most breakages in the first place. Keep a quality extractor set on hand, and the occasional snapped bolt becomes a minor inconvenience rather than a project-ending disaster.
